Sending a student off to college comes with a long checklist; move-in plans, class schedules, supplies and maybe a few emotional goodbyes. In the middle of all that, insurance may not be the first thing on your mind. But before your student heads to campus, it’s a good idea to review how their auto and personal belongings may be covered.

If Your Student Is Taking a Car

If your student is taking a vehicle to school, contact your agent before they leave. In many cases, they may be able to remain on your current auto insurance policy, but your agent should know where the car will be. A different location may impact on the coverage cost.

If Your Student Is Not Taking a Car

Even if your student is leaving the car at home, it may still make sense to keep them listed on your auto policy. That way, they may have coverage when they drive your vehicle during school breaks or weekend visits. Ask your agent whether any discounts may apply, such as a good student discount, or whether the policy should be updated because your student will be driving less often.

If Your Student Is Living in a Dorm

Dorm rooms may be small, but they can still hold a lot of valuable items such as clothes, electronics, textbooks, bikes and more. If your student lives in a dorm, your homeowners policy may provide some coverage for their personal belongings, depending on the policy. In many cases, coverage for a full-time student living on campus may be limited to a percentage of your personal property coverage. Because policies can vary, check with your agent to understand what is covered and whether any changes are needed.

If Your Student Is Living Off Campus

If your student rents an apartment or house off campus, your homeowners policy may not extend the same protection. The landlord’s insurance typically covers the building, not your student’s personal belongings. Renters insurance can be an affordable way to help protect items if they are stolen or damaged by a covered loss, such as a fire. It may also provide liability protection if someone is injured in your student’s rented space.

College is a big step for your student… and for you. Before move-in day, talk with your agent about your student’s living situation, whether they will have a car on campus and what discounts or coverage options may apply. A quick insurance review now can help you feel more prepared for this next chapter.
