What to Do Immediately After an Accident
Here’s what to do right after an accident, but before you file a claim.
- Make sure everyone is safe and in a safe location, if possible.
- Call 911, especially if there are injuries or significant damage.
- Don’t admit fault at the scene.
- Exchange information with the other driver (name, phone number, address, driver’s license, license plate, insurance policy number).
- Document the scene by taking photos of damage, road conditions, location, etc.
- Get the police report number, if applicable.

There is no standard time frame for the claims process. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few months depending on several factors, including the severity of the accident and the extent of the investigation.
How do I track the status of my claim?
You can get updates on your claim by calling your claims adjuster.
What happens if the repair costs more than the original estimate?
The auto shop will submit a supplemental estimate, which the adjuster will review. If the additional costs are warranted and covered, an additional payment will be issued.
