Flooding has affected many areas across the United States in recent years, damaging homes and vehicles alike. According to Carfax, an estimated 482,000 flood-damaged vehicles were still on the road in 2025. Some states have more flood-damaged vehicles in circulation than others. Missouri and Indiana each have between 5,000 and 10,000, while Tennessee and South Carolina each have between 10,000 and 20,000.

Flood-damaged vehicles can develop mechanical problems, electrical issues, warped brake pads and rotors and even mold. Even if your area hasn’t experienced flooding, you could still unknowingly buy a flood-damaged car—unless you know what to look for.

Watch for these warning signs:

  • A moldy or musty odor
  • Stained or discolored carpet or seats
  • Mud or damp spots in the glove compartment or under the seats
  • Moisture in the headlights, brake lights or dashboard

If you notice any of these signs, take a closer look and make sure all instruments and controls work properly. Before buying any used car, it’s also wise to have a mechanic inspect it and review the vehicle or title history for signs of flooding or a salvage title. A little extra research can help ensure the used car you choose is ready for the road ahead.
